Hello readers. The Bharatiya Janata Party has reacted harshly to Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi’s comments in the Lok Sabha that the detention of elected members by the National Security Agency is part of an “undeclared emergency” by the Central government, as Channi was referring to the jailed radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh. Though the Congress Party distanced itself from the remarks saying “opinions are personal”, this has led to a controversy. In another development, the Indian Union will again hold a rally at Jantar Mantar on July 30 to protest against the deteriorating health of jailed Prime Minister Kejriwal. PM Modi will visit Kargil tomorrow to mark the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. We will follow this and more tomorrow. In the meantime, thanks for staying with us to keep track of all the political updates here, only on DH.

The ‘Durbar Hall’ and ‘Ashok Hall’ of Rashtrapati Bhavan have been renamed as ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ and ‘Ashok Mandap’ respectively.
The iconic ‘Durbar Hall’ and ‘Ashok Hall’ at the Presidential Palace, venues for various ceremonies, were renamed as ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ and ‘Ashok Mandap’ respectively on Thursday.
Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence and home of the President of India, is a national symbol and a treasured national treasure.
“Continuous efforts are being made to make it more accessible to the people. Consistent efforts have been made to make the ambience of the Presidential House a reflection of Indian cultural values and ethos,” a statement issued by the President’s Office said.
The Durbar Hall is the venue where important ceremonies and celebrations such as the awarding of national awards take place.
“The word ‘Durbar’ refers to a court or assembly of Indian rulers or the British. Its meaning was lost after India became a republic, i.e. ‘Ganatantra’. The concept of ‘Ganatantra’ is deeply rooted in Indian society since ancient times and ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ is an apt name for the venue,” the statement said.
‘Ashok Hall’ was originally a ballroom.
“The word ‘Ashok’ means one who is ‘free from all suffering’ or ‘bereft of any sorrow’,” the statement said.
He also said that “Ashoka” refers to King Ashoka, a symbol of unity and peaceful coexistence.
“The national emblem of the Republic of India is the lion capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. The word also refers to the Ashoka tree, which has deep significance in Indian religious tradition as well as art and culture. Renaming ‘Ashoka Hall’ as ‘Ashoka Mandap’ will bring uniformity in the language, remove traces of anglicisation and at the same time retain the significant values associated with the word ‘Ashoka’,” the statement said.
