Prime Minister Narendra Modi eyeing third win in Varanasi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is vying for a third term from Varanasi in Lok Sabha 2024 election.
In the 2019 polls, PM Modi won Varanasi with a significant margin, garnering over 6,74,664 votes and a vote share of 63.6 per cent. In 2014, Modi contested from Gujarat’s Vadodara alongside Varanasi.
Who is Congress candidate against PM Modi?
Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai is Modi’s main opponent in Varanasi, making it the third time Rai is contesting against PM Modi in a Lok Sabha election.
Varanasi will go to polls in seventh and final phase of the election on June 1.

• Prime Minister Modi filed his nomination papers on Tuesday after visiting the Kaal Bhairav temple.
• He went to the Dashashwamedh Ghat along the Ganga river to offer prayers.
• A cruise trip to Namo Ghat was also included in the itinerary before the nomination filing.
• After completing the nomination process, Modi met BJP workers at the Rudraksha Convention Centre.

Addressing an election rally at Kalyani in Nadia district, the West Bengal chief minister accused the BJP of spreading falsehood on the Sandeshkhali issue and tarnishing the image of women of the state.
“The only guarantee in the Lok Sabha polls is that Modi is not returning to power. The INDIA bloc would secure between 295 and 315 seats while the BJP would be restricted to a maximum of 200,” she asserted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s offer to “cook food” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi elicited mixed responses from different political parties, with the BJP suspecting a politicized agenda and the CPI(M) suggesting a potential “understanding” between the TMC and the BJP.
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent allegation that RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav last month had fish during a period when some Hindus abstain from having non-vegetarian food, Banerjee on Monday said she was ready to “cook something for him (Modi)” if he wanted though she was not sure whether he would eat what she cooked.
BJP leader Sankudeb Panda claimed Banerjee had deliberately invited Modi knowing well that he is a strict vegetarian.
“This is nothing but her ploy to trap the PM. She knows on the one hand the PM will never eat fish or any non-veg item. If she believes everyone should be allowed to eat what he/she loves to eat, then why is she twisting Modiji’s comments about one’s dietary habits? She is insulting devout Sanatani Hindus” he added.
Reacting to Banerjee’s comments, CPI(M) leader Bikash Bhattacharya said, “Being Dada-Bon (brother and sister), Mamata didi can certainly offer to cook meals for the prime minister, do not know if it is to placate him.”

Modi, who stayed overnight in Kashi after holding a roadshow on Monday, started his day with offering prayers to Maa Ganga on the occasion of Ganga Saptami. Offering prayers to Maa Ganga on this day has special significance.
Thereafter, he boarded motor vessel Swami Vivekananda and reached NaMo Ghat. From there, Modi reached Baba Kaal Bhairav Temple. At the temple gate, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented Angavastra to the PM Modi and people showered flowers on him. The entire temple and the surrounding area resonated with the chants of Har Har Mahadev. Then PM Modi and offered prayers to Baba Kaal Bhairav. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary were also present along with the PM.
After taking his permission and blessings from Baba Kaal Bhairav for filing nomination, Modi reached Varanasi district collectorate.
